The primary purpose of a fuse is to provide overcurrent protection. Its most important job is to protect the circuit's wiring from overheating and potentially causing a fire. In the event of a short circuit or a device drawing too much power, a thin metal element inside the fuse is designed to melt ("blow") and safely disconnect the circuit. This allows for the use of appropriately sized wires for the normal operational load, ensuring safety throughout the vessel's electrical system.
A fuse must always be installed as close as practical to the source of power (e.g., the battery terminal or a distribution busbar). Marine standards (such as ABYC and ISO) specify that the main fuse connected to a battery should be within a very short distance of the terminal—typically 18cm (7 inches). Placing the fuse near the source ensures that almost the entire length of the wire is protected. A fuse placed only at the appliance-end of a wire run leaves the wire unprotected, creating a significant fire hazard.
