A Lifetime on the Water

My path to marine surveying began with a fundamental interest in how things work. After studying electronics, I completed two years of National Service in the South African Navy. Serving as a quartermaster on board the SAS Drakensberg, this period was defined by high-stakes maritime environments, including deployments to the South Pole and the remote outposts of the South Atlantic, such as Bouvet Island and St Helena. As a Quartermaster onboard, I saw and felt firsthand how a 147-meter (482-foot) ship can be thrown around, as if it was a small cork, in the Roaring Forties and Furious Fifties latitudes. These experiences instilled a deep-seated respect for structural integrity and the necessity of reliable systems in the harshest conditions on Earth.









A Global Maritime Journey
My professional experience is built on decades of hands-on involvement with vessels across the globe. From the rugged coastlines of Cape Town to the demanding charter circuits of the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, I have worked on a diverse range of craft. This international exposure has provided me with an intuitive understanding of hull behaviour, mechanical systems, and the long-term effects of different maritime environments.







Composite Expertise: My familiarity with GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) started early, surfing and repairing surfboards to fixing storm-damaged yachts. This evolved into a deep technical understanding of modern composites and laminate structure.

Engineering Foundation: My background in electronics ensures that I approach a vessel's DC/AC systems with a diagnostic mindset, looking beyond the surface to identify underlying faults. Personally I feel that electrics and especially new LifFeP04 requires more attention than what is generally received. 

Operational Experience: Having navigated and maintained boats in varied climates, I understand the practicalities of boat ownership and the "habitability" factors that matter most to owners.

I have spent decades navigating the world’s oceans, accumulating thousands of miles at sea in all conditions imaginable. My logbook includes:

Indian Ocean Crossings: Navigating complex weather systems and remote passages, trying to outrun and dodge a cyclone.







Ocean Passages

North Atlantic (Multiple Double-Crossings): Experience with the rigorous demands of North Atlantic swells and seasonal shifts.

South Atlantic (Multiple Passages): Extensive time in the challenging waters of the Southern Ocean where few sailors go willingly (my favourite part of any global race) .










This "blue water" experience has taken me from Cape Town to the Caribbean and the Mediterranean on a wide variety of vessels. It provided me with an intuitive understanding of how different hull designs and mechanical systems perform when under extreme stress—far beyond the calm of a marina.

Now re-settled in the United Kingdom, I focus my expertise on the specific needs of the local maritime community. Whether it is the unique structural requirements of a steel narrowboat on the inland waterways or the intricate moisture profiling of a GRP sailing yacht, I provide independent, expert assessments.
