The marine surveyor sits down, takes a photo of the wobble, and says, "I’m going to need £500 to tell you the leg is loose, but please note: I didn't move the rug, so I can't be held liable for what’s happening underneath it."

"Diagnosing in the dark" and how you can help!

A marine engineer works with tangible, mechanical evidence. If a marine diesel engine or gearbox fails, they can strip it down, visually inspect a sheared gear or a worn bearing, and point directly to the physical cause. They deal in visible absolutes.

Conversely, a marine surveyor must play detective, sometimes without ever seeing the actual fault. Restricted entirely to Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), they cannot dismantle a seller's machinery or cut open a hull. Instead, they rely entirely on experience to interpret indirect, invisible clues—the specific acoustic thud of a sounding hammer on a laminate or subtle resistance readings on a moisture meter. While the engineer looks directly at the broken part, the surveyor uses hard-earned intuition to diagnose a problem hidden behind a solid fibreglass wall, a task that inherently requires a highly cautious and precise assessment.

Because this assessment relies entirely on what can be reached and tested without causing damage, a thorough survey demands proactive preparation from the buyer, seller, and broker. Time spent hauling deflated dinghies out of cockpit lockers or emptying stowage to reach hull valves and keel bolts is time taken away from actual diagnostics. Clearing deep lockers, ensuring bilge access is unobstructed, and keeping the vessel’s systems powered and ready create a highly efficient environment. Ultimately, presenting an accessible, well-prepared boat ensures that the time paid for is spent strictly on gathering accurate data and protecting the investment, rather than simply moving gear out of the way.

Consider a practical example: a bilge space found flooded with a mixture of oil and water. A marine surveyor cannot undertake cleaning duties or pump out contaminated fluids. If the underlying structural matrix and keel bolts are submerged, they simply cannot be tested. In this scenario, the surveyor is forced to provide an absolute negative regarding access. The resulting report will explicitly state that the area could not be inspected and will record clear evidence of a severe oil leak. Even if the seller or broker insists the mechanical fault was repaired previously, the remaining physical evidence dictates the findings.

Presenting a clean, dry, and accessible vessel allows for a definitive assessment. Conversely, poor preparation inevitably leads to heavy caveats, protective exclusions, and unanswered questions that limit the value of the inspection. Ultimately, a well-prepared boat ensures that the time paid for is spent strictly on gathering accurate data and protecting the investment, rather than navigating avoidable obstacles.
